My digitized reggaeton and hip hop articles (1993-2009) are available here!

 (versión en español, aquí)

It’s been 30 years since I wrote my first articles about hip hop and the genre known today as reggaetón. I no longer write about these topics, but I do care that the articles I wrote are accessible.

It turns out that, because of copyright issues, there’s no way to give digital access to most of my writings from the hip hop and reggaetón collection that I donated to the Center for Puerto Rican Studies. It’s not Centro’s fault, but due to the profiteering system we are subject to.

As a workaround, I have established an unofficial extension of my archival collection through both this website and the blog Reggaetónica that I actively maintained between 2006 and 2011. I’m hoping it will be useful to those interested in these topics. The list of publications I’ve compiled, along with PDF files, consists of 3 interviews, 13 academic articles, and 102 newspaper and magazine articles and reviews. The list additionally includes one newspaper article, nine academic articles, and my two books—none of which are digitized.

A heartfelt ¡gracias! to the newspaper Claridad and magazines In the House and Stress for granting permission to give easy access to their articles through the Center for Puerto Rican Studies digital archive.

And my thanks and endless love to my earliest collaborators: Las Garabatas—namely, Carmen Oquendo Villar, José Raúl “Gallego” González, Damaris Estrada, Harry Hernández, Rossana Vida and Lola Vidal. To the other dear writers that I’ve had the fortune of collaborating with throughout the years: Ana Rokafella García, Wayne Marshall, Deb Pacini Hernández and Frances Negrón-Muntaner. Also to the editors who made us feel at home at their respective publications: Alida Millán Ferrer and Rafael Acevedo in Claridad; Félix Jiménez at The San Juan Star; Richie and Raimundo Villanueva at In the House Magazine; Ket, Vee, Clyde and Dee Tee at Stress; Elizabeth Méndez Berry at Vibe.
